Governance and Risk Management in the Age of AI

Conversely, the EU is taking a more prescriptive and horizontal approach through initiatives like the EU AI Act, which aims to establish comprehensive regulations for AI technologies. This act categorizes AI systems based on risk levels, imposing stricter requirements for high-risk applications. While this approach aims to protect citizens and maintain ethical standards, it may not be sufficiently nuanced for specific domains, potentially leading to a one-size-fits-all framework that overlooks unique industry challenges. 


The Importance of International Standards 

To support organizations in navigating the risks associated with AI, several new international standards have been developed. There are also a number of standards that are not specific to AI but are also relevant in AI development and use. For instance, ISO/IEC 27001 provides a framework for information security management, which is crucial for safeguarding sensitive data used in AI applications.


ISO/IEC 42001 (AI Management Systems) offers guidelines for the responsible development and use of AI systems. This standard emphasizes the importance of transparency, accountability, and ethical considerations in AI deployment. 


ISO/IEC 23894 (AI Risk Management) offers strategic guidance for managing risks connected to the development and use of AI. It provides guidance for integrating risk management into AI-driven activities and business functions. ISO 31000 (Risk Management) is the basis for this standard; however ISO/IEC 23894 addresses new and emerging risks specific to AI and comprehensively maps risk management processes across the entire AI system lifecycle.


ISO/IEC 23053 (Framework for AI Systems Using Machine Learning) outlines a framework for the design, development, and deployment of AI systems that use machine learning techniques, focusing on interoperability, performance, and accountability.


Adoption of these standards can help ensure compliance with regulations such as the EU AI Act. CEN and CENELEC, the European Standardization Organizations, have stated that companies that comply with international standards, such as ISO 42001, will be able to leverage their compliance to meet the relevant provisions of the AI Act. 


Beyond compliance, international standards play a crucial role in establishing a unified framework for AI governance and bridging regulatory gaps. They facilitate interoperability and consistency across borders, allowing organizations to implement best practices regardless of their geographical location. Moreover, international standards help mitigate the risks associated with AI by promoting ethical considerations and accountability in AI development and deployment. 


As AI technologies continue to evolve, the adoption of international standards will be vital for both governance and risk management. They provide a common language and set of expectations that organizations can rely on, fostering trust among stakeholders and enhancing public confidence in AI applications. They can also serve to differentiate the companies that adopt them, allowing both AI technology suppliers and users to demonstrate their commitment to responsible AI use and enhance their competitive edge.
